Following extensive review and discussion, US Youth Soccer, AYSO, and US Club Soccer have collectively decided to move to an age group player formation cycle that runs from August 1 to July 31, starting with the 2026-27 season/registration year. This change was made based on additional critical feedback, data, and expert input to better align players with their school-grade peers. The associations feel that this age group player formation will be the most inclusive and help increase participation.

Overview of Age Group Formation Changes
Starting with the 2026-27 season, U.S. Youth Soccer, AYSO, and US Club Soccer will implement a new age group formation cycle. This cycle will run from August 1 to July 31, aligning soccer age groups with school grades. This adjustment is designed to create a more cohesive and supportive environment for youth soccer players across the country.

Age Group Placement
Players will be placed in age groups based on their birthdates within the new cycle. For example, a child born between August 1, 2016 and July 31, 2017, will be categorized as U10 for the 2026-27 season.

Implications for Players and Teams

Inclusivity: The new system aims to enhance the youth soccer experience by allowing children to play with peers from their school year.

Player Movement: Players may be allowed to play up an age group based on skill and development, but cannot play down. Players entering high school can petition to play up an age group. Decisions on playing an age group up will be made by the program’s Director of Coaching. There is no guarantee a player will be moved up an age group. It will be highly encouraged that all players below high school grades remain in the new age group classification based on class school year.
